Preparation
This unit will focus on Software Defined Networking (SDN) performance challenges. The following reading material is expected preparatory work before the lecture.
Reading material¶
Paper¶
The following is a survey regarding different analysis of the different scalability issues that may arise in the deployment of SDN. It is not expected that you memorize the controller implementations or how they differ, but rather that you focus on the topology- and mechanism-related approaches in SDN-deployment and what issues motivate them.
A survey: Control plane scalability issues and approaches in Software-Defined Networking
Paper¶
The following paper focuses on the analysis of flow-table occupancy and optimizations for signalling traffic in SDN. It is not expected that you memorize the equations and mathmatical expressions presented in the paper, but that you understand the underlying factors that are used in the performance analysis and the analysis' results.
Optional Content¶
Paper¶
The following paper presents recent work in utilizing the increased resources available in modern networking devices to have an SDN-controller present in all nodes of the network. There is an accompanied video, where one of the authors of the paper presents some high-level findings of their research work. Note that this technique is likely not set into production, but may be an emerging hierarchical design for SDN.
